Long-life, weather-resistant seals for structural and industrial applications.
Sealing
Structural and industrial sealing protects joints and assemblies from moisture, weathering and movement over long service lifetimes - most visibly in structural glazing, where silicone seals laminated glass panels into their frames.
The Sealing Process
Getting a consistent, accurate seal depends on precise, repeatable metering, not manual application.
Structural sealing dispenses a two-component sealant into a joint or gap, where it cures to form a flexible, weather-resistant barrier. Unlike rigid structural bonding, sealants are typically designed to accommodate some movement - thermal expansion, building settlement, or vibration - without cracking or losing adhesion.
- Consistent bead size and mix ratio matter for both appearance and performance - a poorly mixed sealant may not cure fully, while an inconsistent bead can leave weak points.
- Long service life is often the priority - structural glazing seals, for example, need to perform reliably for decades in an installed building.

Materials Used for Sealing
- Silicone - the primary sealing material for structural glazing, valued for UV resistance and long-term flexibility.
- Polyurethane - sealing and bonding combined, used where some structural load-bearing is also required.
- Polysulphide - a specialist, moisture-resistant sealant. Used industry-wide as a secondary structural glazing sealant.
2KM Machines for Sealing
- PGM 200 / PGM 320 - silicone and polyurethane sealants from pressurised vessels, up to 50,000 mPas.
- PGM 400 / PGM 420 - silicone sealing of laminated glass panels, dispensed directly from 205 litre drums - the confirmed platform for structural glazing work.
- Decanting System - built to decant silicone into cartridges or pails.
Industries Relying on Sealing
1. Structural Glass - silicone sealing of laminated glass panels into aluminium frames is one of 2KM's most established, well-documented applications.
2. Automotive - PU / MS Polymer sealants widely used for many sealing applications.
3. Transportation - PU & Silicone sealant used in the construction of box vehicles, trailers etc.
4. General Industry - Silicone, PU & MS Polymer products used widely to seal in general industry.
Sealing - FAQs
What materials are generally used for industrial sealing?
Silicone is the primary material for structural glazing seals, valued for UV resistance and long-term flexibility. Polyurethane combines sealing with some structural bonding. Polysulphide, MS Polymer and Polyurethanes are also widely used.
What industries might be involved in sealing?
Structural glass Manufacture, Automotive, Air Filtration Transportation and many more...
Is purchasing sealant in bulk containers more cost effective than cartridge use?
Generally, yes - bulk containers avoid the packaging and handling premium built into pre-filled cartridges, reducing cost per litre for higher-volume production. Cartridges suit lower-volume or occasional use, where convenience outweighs unit cost. A 2KM machine dispensing directly from bulk containers combines the cost advantage of bulk purchasing with metered accuracy.
Would a 2KM machine help to reduce cost and speed up my sealing process?
In most cases, yes - automated metering reduces the waste and inconsistency of manually applied sealant, and dispenses a consistent, repeatable bead. The specific savings depend on your current process and sealant volume, which our engineering team can assess directly.
